World War I

DOCA is working closely with the Town Council, Wiltshire Museum and a number of other organisations to try and create a programme of beautiful and contemporary events to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I.

Our first phase of work is to create an installation made from knitted or crocheted poppies.  We have already had contributions from local knitters, but to make it a really spectacular piece we need many hundreds of poppies.

If you would like to be part of this project, by knitting, donating wool, volunteering to help put the installation together nearing completion please download our knitting and crochet pattern, or get in touch via the Contact page.

We are looking for as many red, white and purple poppies as possible. If you are a venue that can become a drop off point for knitted poppies please contact us. You can drop off wool or completed poppies in Devizes Books and Sprout.

Paper Cranes

We are also looking for people to help us make paper cranes – another part of this project will be an installation in St. Johns Church, where a thousand tiny origami birds will be suspended from the ceiling as a symbol of peace.  To do this we need you to help us make the birds.

They should be made using a sheet of paper no bigger than A4, if you want to see how they are made, here’s a video. All completed birds can be left at the same places as the poppies

We will need any completed poppies and cranes by the beginning of September - contact us if you are unable to drop them off in Devizes and need to sort out alternative arrangements.

Look out for information on the project as it unfolds. We will be attempting to arrange pop up knitting groups and more as the project progresses.
