Devizes Lantern Parade & Christmas Festival

30th November 2018

Attracting crowds of over to 3,500 and celebrating the start of the festive season, Devizes Winter Parade boasts one of the region’s most spectacular lantern processions. A river of hundreds of beautiful creations, made by our talented local participants wind its way through the town, collect Father Christmas en-route and arrive back in the Market Place for the Devizes Christmas Lights switch on.

The 2017 Lantern Parade attracted record crowds with approximately 3500 people attending the event. We worked with 24 schools around the local area to make the beautiful creations seen on parade, including 4 groups new for 2017.  We welcomed new lantern making venues on board who hosted lantern making workshops, including Needham House and Hillworth Park Cafe, and increased our days at Wiltshire Museum.

We are always happy to talk to new venues that would like to host a workshop, or you can attend one of our training sessions if you’d like to run your own sessions independently but need to learn the basic skills.

A huge thanks to Mick and Chris Davey along with their team of helpers, Kelvin Nash, Ken Hulbert, Dave Buxton for making the amazing new dinosaur lantern and bringing their beautiful flamingos along. We look forward to seeing what they create for 2018. We would also like to thank St. Johns Church and Parish Hall for letting us use the Hall and Church as Lantern HQ and the Crown Centre for storing our lanterns on the run up to the Parade.

Please note our large lanterns are available to hire, or we can undertake commissions for other organisations. Please contact us directly for details.

Donate hereIf you enjoyed the parade please consider making a donation to enable us to continue to subsidise workshops for local children and families to attend. A basic lantern costs £5 to make and light – if you can spare it please donate via our donations page

Lantern Making Workshops

We hold a number of Lantern making workshops in the run up to the Parade, including a number of open workshops at different venues that are open to all, with materials provided – all we ask is a small donation. We suggest £5 for a small lantern which requires one light.

We can supply additional lights for larger lanterns, these cost £3 each and include batteries so are reusable.

Beginners’ workshops

  • Wiltshire Museum – TBC
  • Market Lavington Parish Hall – 17th November, 1-4pm
  • Hillworth Park – 14th November, 6.30-8.30pm
  • More workshop dates to be confirmed

We will run a small number of advanced lantern making sessions depending on demand, these will be charged at £10 per session.

This may enable you to be part of the large lantern making crew and give you the skills to create animated lanterns like our flamingos and the dinosaur seen in 2018 – if you would be interested in being part of this team please contact us to register.

If your school or group would like to take part in making lanterns and would like our support, please contact us to discuss setting up a workshop. We ask that you can guarantee a minimum of 10 people, and we ask for a small donation of towards the materials.
