Devizes Lantern Parade & Christmas Festival
29th November 2019
Markets from 12.30pm
Parade sets off at 6.15pm
Attracting crowds of over to 3,500 and celebrating the start of the festive season, Devizes boasts one of the region’s most spectacular lantern processions. A river of hundreds of beautiful creations, made by our talented local participants wind its way through the town, collect Father Christmas en-route and arrive back in the Market Place for the Devizes Christmas Lights switch on.
The Lantern Parade attracts huge crowds with approximately 3500 people attending each year event, the parade is the culmination of lots of work done by busy young people and families who create fantastic lanterns to illuminate the streets.
This year we are introducing the theme ‘Other Worlds’ this will support the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing – if you feel like adding to this section think rockets, aliens, stars and planets.
We are currently seeking funding to enable us to continue our lantern making classes and in 2019 we hope again be working with schools around the local area to make the beautiful creations seen on parade, including 4 groups new for 2017. We are always seeking new venues and groups to get involved with.
We are always happy to talk to new venues that would like to host a workshop, or you can attend one of our training sessions if you’d like to run your own sessions independently but need to learn the basic skills.
If you are unable to make our workshops but want to take part in the parade, then we will be introducing ‘Make Your Own’ kits this year for £10 each – we will provide you with the materials and instructions to make a basic lantern, including one lamp, – contact us for more information or to request a set
We would like to thank St. Johns Church and Parish Hall for letting us use the Hall and Church as Lantern HQ.
Please note our large lanterns are available to hire, or we can undertake commissions for other organisations. Please contact us directly for details.
If you enjoyed the parade please consider making a donation to enable us to continue to subsidise workshops for local children and families to attend. A basic lantern costs £5 to make and light – if you can spare it please donate via our donations page
